What to Look for Before Hiring a Home Service Marketing Agency
A contractor's buyer checklist: the questions that separate a real partner from a lead reseller — ownership, measurement, transparency, and how they handle Google.
Hiring the wrong marketing partner is expensive and slow to unwind. Use this checklist before you sign anything. You can download it below and bring it to every sales call.
The buyer's checklist
- Do they understand home services? Trades convert differently than e-commerce. General marketers often miss the phone-and-booking reality.
- What do they measure? Clicks and impressions are not the business outcome. Ask whether they track leads, bookings, and — where data allows — sold work.
- Who owns the accounts and data? Google Ads, GA4, your Business Profile — these should be in your name. Google is clear that your business representation must be accurate and under your control.
- Can you access your Google accounts today? If the answer is vague, walk.
- Who owns the website if you leave, and can you take it with you?
- How do they define a “lead”? A form fill and a booked job are very different things.
- Do they connect marketing to the call center? How do they handle missed calls and slow response?
- Can they explain their strategy in plain English without buzzwords?
- How are reviews handled? Google prohibits fake and incentivized reviews and review gating. A partner that offers to buy or gate reviews is a liability.
- Do they guarantee Google rankings? Nobody can honestly guarantee rankings — a guarantee is a red flag, not a feature.
- What fees are separate from ad spend, and is the ad account in your name with your card on it?
- What is the cancellation structure? Long lock-ins and hostage-held assets are warning signs.
Why the Google questions matter
Two of Google's own policies are worth knowing before you hire anyone. First, your business information and any third-party representation must be truthful — you should own and control your profile and accounts. Second, Google prohibits fake, incentivized, or gated reviews. An agency that promises rankings or offers shady review tactics is exposing your business, not protecting it.
Green flags
A strong partner talks about booked jobs and economics, sets up accounts in your name, reports in plain language, defines a lead clearly, and is comfortable telling you when more ad spend is not the answer. If they can't do those things, keep looking.
